To keep the damage from holiday eating to a minimum, consider making the next 5 Monday-Tuesday combinations rich in fruits and vegetables, and devoid of starchy carbs (bread, pasta, pizza, potatoes, and rice) and things that contain high fructose corn syrup (most regular sodas, ketchup, and mayonnaise, for example).
In the news, a placebo-controlled pilot study at the Mayo Clinic on 25 healthy volunteers with an average age of 29, consumed a 16oz energy drink and showed a significant rise in blood pressure and norepinephrine levels when compared to a placebo group.
The concern, as presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2015, is that these changes could increase the risk or even precipitate a heart attack or stroke! At age 29 you may get away with it but males over 40, and women over 50, watch out!
Actually this concern isn’t that new! Weight loss medications, those that are amphetamine based, and designed to raise your metabolism, have similar effects on blood pressure and epinephrine levels. They share the same concerns as energy drinks.
